After 6 months on maternity leave and not in a position to go back to my former job in retail I began helping out a friends Mum who was a retired gardener. She still maintained one garden and asked if I would like to lend a hand a few days a week. Within a couple of visits to the garden something awakened in me, I realised I loved being outside, the smells, sights and sounds of a garden still thrill me in the same way as they did then. It all seemed like perfect common sense and came so naturally to me. I remember one day in particular when I was watering a long border and watching the bees fly from flower to flower, the smell of rich compost and the sound of birdsong and I knew that I had found my calling.
